Mudfish Hunt

By admin On October 31, 2010 Comments Off

Mudfish Trapping in a peripheral wetland at Lake Papaitonga. 12 gee-minnow traps were set overnight, catching 4 banded kokopu, one unwell giant kokopu and a multitude of koura. Sadly the mudfish remained elusive… The habitat was raupo and sedge, very little (hard to find) water. There are several different videos linked together here showing the different traps being checked. Please forgive the camera skills, there was no room and we needed far more hands than were present! It gives the idea anyway.

Wetlands supporting livelihoods in Malawi and Zambia

By admin On October 30, 2010 Comments Off

A film by Wetlands International that shows the importance of wise use of dambos (seasonally flooded grasslands) in Central Southern Africa, for the communities that live around them. In the last two decades, periodic droughts in Zambia and Malawi have rapidly increased, causing alarming seasonal food and fresh water shortages resulting in increased health and economic vulnerability during the dry seasons. For many people in Zambia and Malawi the only way to survive these periods is by using the dambos for agriculture providing enough for local consumption and surplus for the market. The film shows a project that Wetlands International started in 2006 in the Mpika wetlands in Zambia and the Simlemba wetlands in Malawi to support the people in the dambos.
